Biography

Linda Paterson is originally from Texas and now lives in Scotland.

Early Life

She was born in 1973 and showed interest and talent in art from a very young age. Her parents encouraged Linda and her siblings to express themselves creatively, and she also received early art training in and outside of school.

University

Linda started studying sculpture during her first semester at university when the drawing class she originally wanted to take was full. She immediately responded to the new discipline. Once she began her first sculpture, Self Portrait, she realized how fulfilling it is to shape something with her hands, and has been in love with making sculptures ever since.

Her lifelong interest in drawing continues, and she now enjoys the contrast between the immediacy of drawing and the patient unfolding of sculpting.

At university, Linda's main mentors were Mary Visser for sculpture and Patrick Veerkamp for ceramics and drawing. She received numerous awards during university both for her artwork and for her academic achievement. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, in 1994, with a degree in Sculpture and Writing.

Teaching Experience

Before embarking on her career as a full-time artist, Linda sought a way to use her skills and enthusiasm to make a tangible difference in her community. After careful consideration of all of her options, she chose to join Teach for America to teach underprivileged children. In 1995, she was sent to East Orange, New Jersey, approximately 15 miles outside of New York City, to teach at Sojourner Truth Middle School.

Art classes were not on the curriculum at Sojourner Truth, so Linda brought art into each of the various subjects she taught. She used her imagination and energy to engage the students and to foster their own creativity. Linda also organized and supervised groups of students after school in designing and painting three large, themed murals in the school hallways.

Relocation

During one of the summer breaks between teaching terms, she traveled to the British Isles. She moved to Scotland in 1999 and soon became active in the local art scene.

Volunteering

In 2001, Linda accepted a volunteer position as Art Convener for the Moray Arts Club. The club has been in existence since 1951, and offers art, music, and drama events for the residents of the county of Moray in northeastern Scotland. As Art Convener, Linda was in charge of all art events, including two well-established annual exhibitions. While in office, Linda expanded the group's programme to include an annual art sale, a weekly art group, demonstrations, discussion groups, art gallery bus trips, meet an artist nights, and a special themed exhibition for 2004. She retired as convener in 2004 but remained active on the committee for a number of years.

As a result of her work with the Moray Arts Club, Linda was invited in 2002 to join the board of directors for the Moray Art Centre, which opened the first dedicated arts centre in Moray. For over a decade, Linda was a valuable member of the board both as a professional artist and as liaison with the over 300 artist members of the Moray Arts Club.

Self-Employment

In 2003, Linda successfully launched herself as a self-employed artist. She continues to devote herself to making beautiful, sensual sculptures and drawings.

Linda's artwork has been featured in exhibitions in Texas, Scotland, and Germany. She is currently represented in Scottish galleries, and pieces are housed in private collections in Europe, the United States, and New Zealand.
